Brugmansia Ecstasy - detail face 2
Acrylic on canvas. Detail of Brugmansia Ecstasy painting. This image came to me during a meditative state. Brugmansia flowers, also known as angel trumpets, are used in shamanic intoxication - to promote communication between the spiritual world. These shamans act like messengers, are known for mending souls and can express meaning through art. Shaman means "one who knows" and a specific shaman called a psychopomp is known in Jungian circles as a mediator between the conscious and unconscious worlds. Brugmansia are poisonous and can be fatal if ingested incorrectly, so the shamanic ingestion is very ritualized. I found all this out AFTER I painted the piece, but I feel that is what the piece is about.
